In July 2018, Shanghai stood out from the crowd, attracting the Tesla Gigafactory to settle down. Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory is China's first wholly foreign-owned vehicle manufacturing project and Tesla's first Gigafactory outside the United States.

After Tesla decided to settle in Shanghai, the Gigafactory made rapid progress and started construction in January 2019. On September 26, it was announced that the construction of the super factory had been completed; the production qualification was obtained the next month, and Model 3 production began.
